Brunnsoktetten (The Spa Octet)
A prominent part of the orchestra is Brunnsoktetten,
founded in 1991, consisting of
eight wind musicians (Brunnsoktetten is Swedish for The Spa Octet,
referring to the spas of the time where people drank the waters,
rested, and listened to the music). We play mainly
original music from the late 19th century, but sometimes also more
modern music. This octet, in period dress, is ideal for locations
where there is not room for the entire orchestra.The heyday of the octet music was at the end of the 19th century. Musicians from military bands, as well as other professional musicians, made some extra money by playing at the spa hotels and local dances. Octet is sometimes a misleading name, since such an ensemble may contain as many as eleven musicians. Brunnsoktetten, however, usually has the original combination of eight wind instruments and no drummer.
The repertoire consists mainly of hand-written original music from the years of 1885-1920. This archive belonged to Gustaf Ferdinand Lundin (1849-1910), musical director at a Swedish hussar regiment (1896-1906). We managed to acquire this cultural treasure of almost 600 arrangements from a collector some years ago.
